With the first hopeful signs of spring and the sudden delightful rise in temperature, it is easy to be struck by the common cold. It turns out that poor health is not just for the winter months.
Although it is debatable whether alcohol can cure a cold (although apparently it can make you more resistant to them), the healing properties of ginger, honey and lemon are not to be doubted.
Hot Apple-Ginger Toddy
Ingredients (makes one drink)
8.3 oz apple cider
1-2 oz of dark liquor (applejack, bourbon or dark rum are all good choices)
A drizzle of honey
A squeeze of lemon
Peeled fresh gingerroot, coarsely chopped into thumb-sized pieces
Mulling spices (cinnamon sticks, whole cloves, allspice, nutmeg – whatever you have on hand)
Optional garnishes: cinnamon stick stirrer, lemon slice, apple slice, ginger slice
Add the ginger and mulling spices to the cider and simmer in a saucepan over medium-low heat for at least 5 minutes (or a full 15 or more if you want full flavor). Drizzle some honey into a mug and add the liquor, hot cider, and a squeeze of lemon juice. Stir.
