Yes, it’s National Toast Day, who knew ! Luckily that gives us a timely segue into Toast Ale, founded by Tristram Stuart who also runs enviromental charity Feedback. After visiting a Sandwich manufacturer and seeing the waste of 13,000 slices of bread a day Tristram decided to launch Toast Ale, made from surplus bread. A whopping 44% of all bread made in this country gets thrown away.
Although the idea is a Belgian import from ‘The Brussels Beer project’ (covered here) ; it’s the first of its kind in the UK and goes some way to putting to good use the surplus bread that would otherwise be thrown away. The project is also close to Tristrams heart as the Charity Feedback campaigns to end food waste.
While the small beginnings of the project mean that it partners with Hambleton Ales in Yorkshire the recipe is available on their website for other brewers to use and collaborate with Toast Ale.
