By Bring a Bottle on 5/11/13 4:56 PM

When hosting a drinks party you can serve a variety of different drinks alongside canapés, although champagne is always the drink of choice serving just wine or beer is just as acceptable as long as you choose canapés that complement the chosen tipple. Below are a few ideas to help you

The ideal accompaniment to a chilled glass of champagne is smoked salmon and the perfect canapé to serve are Blinis, these small bite size yeasted pancakes, traditionally from Russia are made from buckwheat flour. There are many recipes out there but the Smiths from Smithfield will impress your guests:

Although most people have had a bad experience with Tequila it can be perfect to serve alongside Mexican style canapés, if your not sure about drinking tequila straight why not make frozen margarita’s! The ideal party food to serve would be Quesadillas which is like a toasted sandwich and very easy to make. Jamie Oliver has a brilliant recipe; Quesadillas with guacamole, if you want a slightly spicier version use some pre cooked thinly sliced chorizo.

Mulled cider

Now the nights are drawing in and the temperature is dropping you need a drink that is warming, and Mulled Cider is a good choice to serve at drinks party. This is best served with pub grub style canapés such as mini sausages’ and a creamy mash or the ever-popular Scotch egg. For the perfect Scotch egg try Heston Blumenthal’s recipe.

Suggested Cider Orchard Pig Truffler Dry Cider

White Wine & Red Wine

To choose canapés to serve with White or Red Wine totally depends on the grape variety, but generally any fish or chicken canapé will compliment a white wine well and for Red usually something heavier such as game, red meat or cheese.

If you are not entirely sure how to pair canapés with wine use the country where the wine is produced for inspiration, for example if you opt to serve an Italian white such as Pinot Grigio or Gavi I would serve Delia Smith’s recipe for Crostini with Anchovies, Roasted Vegetables and Mozzarella.

Suggested White Wine Garganega Pinot Grigio

For Red wine if you decide to go for something like a burgundy the perfect canapé to serve would be Mini Yorkshire puddings with sliced roast beef and a horseradish cream. James Martin presenter of Saturday Kitchens’ recipe is delicious and substantial!

Suggested Red Wine Louis Jadot Bourgogne Pinot Noir

The perfect accompaniment to ice cold vodka is caviar, you can serve this straight up or follow this quirky recipe from Rhubarb Food design.

Suggested Vodka Stolichnaya
