South Africa’s Coastal Region is the most important wine region in the country as it takes in the districts of Stellenbosch, Paarl, Swartland, Darling, Tygerberg, Tulbagh and Cape Point. Located along the West Coast, Coastal Region’s climate is considered maritime and is influenced by the Atlantic and Indian Oceans. This does, however, vary from district to district. In terms of viticulture, Coastal Region is hugely diverse growing a mixture of red and white, cool and warm climate grapes from Chardonnay, Semillion and Sauvignon Blanc to Cabernet Sauvignon an Shiraz. However, Chenin Blanc – known locally as Steen – and Pinot Noir have the edge.
