Barossa Valley is situated north of Adelaide in South Australia and along with Eden Valley makes up the region of Barossa. Like other parts of South Australia, Barossa Valley has a Mediterranean climate and its rainy winters and cool summers provide perfect conditions for red wines, most notably Shiraz.Though much of Australia's wine industry was heavily influenced by British tastes, Barossa Valley was founded by German settlers. Barossa Valley’s winemaking history spans back over 160 years and it contains some of the oldest vines in the whole of Australia. Aside from Shiraz, the area produces outstanding Cabernet Sauvignon, Grenache, Mouvèdre and Reisling. As the modern Australian wine industry came to favour Cabernet Sauvignon, the focus on this region was Shiraz and so it fell out of favour. However, international attention has since been garnered by the signature, full-bodied style of Barossa Shiraz and its richly spicy, chocolate notes.
